Help is at hand when support is needed
Understanding Attendance Allowance - and how it can help you stay independent at home

As we get older, everyday tasks can start to feel more challenging. Whether it's mobility, preparing meals, managing medication, or simply managing the home, a little extra support can make a big difference to maintaining independence and quality of life.
What many people don't realise is that there is financial help available.
Attendance Allowance is a government benefit designed for people over State Pension age who need extra support due to a long-term health condition or disability. Yet despite its value, more than a million eligible people across the UK are still not claiming it.
One of the most important things to understand is that Attendance Allowance is not means-tested. That means your income, savings, or pension do not affect your eligibility. It is also tax-free, so it won't impact your tax position.
How much could you receive?
Attendance Allowance is paid at two different weekly rates, depending on the level of support needed:
- Higher rate - for those who need help both during the day and at night
- Lower rate - for those who need help during either the day or the night
From April 2026, the weekly payments are:
- Higher rate: £114.60 per week
- Lower rate: £76.70 per week
This equates to:
- Nearly £6,000 per year at the higher rate
- Nearly £4,000 per year at the lower rate
Importantly, this money is not ring-fenced. You can use it in whatever way best supports your daily life - including paying for practical help at home.
Could you or a loved one benefit?
To qualify, you must:
- Be over State Pension age (currently 66)
- Have a physical or mental condition that means you need help or supervision
This doesn't just mean full-time care. Many people qualify because they need help with staying safe at home.
Applying can feel daunting – but you don't have to do it alone
The application process involves completing a detailed form, which can feel overwhelming. Decisions are largely based on the information you provide, so it's important to fully explain how your condition affects your day-to-day life.
Supporting evidence such as GP letters, or prescription lists can strengthen your application.
This is where the right support makes all the difference.
