About us

Chores & Challenges was founded in the summer of 2024 by Matt and Lu Kalupka to support people who would benefit from friendly, reliable help from trusted local people.

Matt and Lu already own and run Home Counties Carers, an award-winning care company serving Guildford and the surrounding villages. Their compassionate, person-centred approach has earned the business an "Outstanding" rating from the Care Quality Commission (CQC) - the highest rating awarded in the care industry.

Carer helping a client out and about

Through their experience working with older people and families, Matt and Lu recognised an important gap. Many people want to remain independent in their own homes, but don't necessarily need "care". What they do need is practical, flexible help with everyday tasks that can gradually become more difficult.

That insight became the inspiration behind Chores & Challenges - a unique service designed to make life easier, safer, happier, and more enjoyable.

“Sometimes it’s the little things that get in the way …”

"We wanted to create a new kind of service that helps people with the everyday chores and challenges that can start to get in the way of enjoying life.

Often these are small tasks that people used to manage themselves, but now find more difficult. We also understand that many people don’t want to keep asking friends, neighbours, or family members for help.

Flexibility is at the heart of everything we do. There are no lengthy contracts or long-term commitments. Clients simply purchase pre-paid hours and use them whenever they need support, with a simple flat hourly rate regardless of the task."

A service that’s proven to make a real difference

During the early development of Chores & Challenges, research was commissioned to better understand the impact the service was having on clients' lives.
The findings showed measurable improvements in wellbeing, confidence, and overall quality of life, including:
  • Greater feelings of independence and control in everyday life
  • Increased feelings of safety, reassurance, and companionship
  • Improvements in comfort, cleanliness, and enjoyment of the home environment
  • A positive impact on happiness and emotional wellbeing

Clients also shared the personal difference the service had made to them:

“It feels like someone’s on your side.”

“A great experience with someone who genuinely cares.”

“I received practical help after my knee replacement.”

“The research demonstrated the positive impact our Hatha Helpers have within the community. We’ve created a unique service that combines the warmth of a supportive local community with the reliability and professionalism people need to maintain a better quality of life.”
